FOSSILS PROJECT

FOSSILS PROJECT SUBJECT: Social sciences and natural sciences COURSE: Level 4 of Primary Education We have been working for 2 weeks with fossils project with students from the fourth level of Primary Education. Our pupils had to make a mass with flour, salt and hot water. They were mixing the materials until they got a uniform mass. Once it was warm, they were drawing some shapes, steps, pictures using different kinds of materials such as plastic forks, stones, leaves, shells, toys which they had at home…Once they were decorated or drawn, they put the mass in the oven at 100 degrees. When the mass was cold they could understand how a step or a rest of an animal could be kept for long time. Here we can see an example of a fossil stone that students made in the project. After creating them, they had to write on their social sciences notebook the process they were following to and some conclusions they got about the way some animals, plants, objects, mater

Who has better roads?

WHO HAS BETTER ROADS? The idea of this project is to compare the current ways of communication and transport with those used by the ancient Romans. Students receive (or they can search on the Internet) maps of the current roads in Spain and of the ancient Roman roads. They must compare both maps and think about the differences and similarities they find. We can provide them with some questions to help them in the process: Which cities do the roads connect? Which roads are better distributed? Which current roads coincide with the ancient Roman paths? Which cities do you think were important during the Roman times? Why? With the result of their investigation they can elaborate a presentation using PowerPoint, for example, or they can perform an oral presentation as well. Javier García

Roman Empire project

Share a History project or activity which brings History into the classroom. If you want to use any other images teaching a geographical or historical process feel free to use it. Project: Roman cities Level: 3 rd course of Primary Education This project is closely related to Unit 7 in which we have learnt about modern cities and how they are distributed (modern district, historical centre and suburbs) and so, we can compare the differences between the buildings and streets in roman times and nowadays (size, shape, materials…). First of all, we are going to watch next video in which it is said how the roman empire was founded and there is a brief explanation about roman cities. After watching the video, I will divide the class in groups of four or five. Along two weeks, we are going to elaborate different roman cities with recycled materials such as, tetrapacks, empty bottles, containers, tins, cardboards, papers… To do that, I have prepared a Powerpoint for the

Arts + Social Science project

At the end of years 5 and 6 we always like to create projects that get children closer to Art through Social Sciences, and one of the activities that we are doing with our students at the moment is the recreation of Art paintings and sculptures that we have studied previously, but this time they will do it at home. Even though we are going through moments of extreme difficulties, there are still ways to engage with art through virtual museum tours and social media. This is why we asked our students to recreate their favorite works of art using everyday items around their homes. The results can be varied, creative, and are going to last on our students´ memories forever as a funny way of living art. This is a way of combining knowledge, concepts and methodology from two different areas such as Social Science (history) and Arts and Crafts. Learning about famous artists can be lots of fun and a great opportunity for children to explore different techniques and mediums, a

Timeline

In my opinion, a fantastic way of introducing History in the class in the Social Science Area is by bringing their own personal history to the class. It is a way of raising awareness in the students about what the concept of time and history really implies. We usually do it in two different ways and through two different activities. In the first activity the kids will have to design, complete and decorate their own personal time line. They have to think about their own past, and about the most important events that have happened throughout this (short) period of time. Then they will post these ideas on a poster and explain them marking the events on the timeline. The second activity is the creation of a poster or display about an old loved person in their family, which is usually a grandfather or grandmother. This way they can contrast the differences between two periods of time, about the characteristics that each period have and the differences in education, culture, f

QUIZIZZ

Hello guys!! Another tool that is similar to Kahoot and can be used to assess if the children have acquired the necessary vocabulary and reach their objectives is “ Quizizz”,  which is rather entertaining for children. Some tests are created, the children learn through playing. Thank you for everything!  Stay safe. Regards! Esperanza Gómez

KAHOOT!

Hi everyone! I have been reading contents for "6. Evaluation and assessment" and I agree with it. I believe that not only  should we pay attention to the final task in the learning process but we also have to focus on the whole progress.  Kahoot! can be a great resource that could be used as both diagnostic, formative and summative assessment. It will be our task to think about what we want to evaluate through it, when we are going to do so, how we can evaluate it with Kahoot! and who else will be involved in the learning process. Kahoot! brings us the change of making motivating learning but we must take into account these kinds of items to make the assessment useful using this app. I like Kahoot! so much and my students love it when they see on the screen that we are about to play with it. However it's our job to use it properly. Regards! Alberto Irigoyen

Hope you like the activity. Laura Sáenz

Picasso

Our pupils should know the importance of history for their own future. If we learn from our mistakes, we won’t make them again. On the 26 th  April 1937, the village of Guernica (Vizcaya) was bombed by the German Condor Legion and the Italian Legionary Air Force. It was a disaster for the village and a reflection of what a war means. In this project four subjects are going to work together: Social Science, Spanish, French and Arts. At the beginning, in Social Science, they are going to get information on different websites about where Guernica is, its history, its geography, its population,… and also about the bombs in Guernica. Moreover, in Spanish, they are going to create a biography of Picasso and some of his most well-known paintings. Later, in French, the teacher is going to introduce Guernica and also Picasso by using the following presentation: https://prezi.com/9rilewt3nb-b/?utm_campaign=share&utm_medium=copy&rc=ex0share  → in French https://prez

Solar System project

Hi! I would like to share with you an easy project about The Solar System which could be developed sharing contents between Social Sciences and Arts. I consider it as relevant and motivating, your students will want to do it. Appart from that, you can add stickers on the blackboard to write what pupils know about the solar system, what they want to know and what they have learnt once the project is finished. This creation will help your students to get the contents that are stablished in the curriculum for Social Sciences.  Bye!  Alberto Irigoyen

Water Cycle Activity

Hello everyone! I will like to explain one activity that is related to social science content and it is  the water cycle.  This activity is aimed at the children’s of Primary school learning the vocabulary on the  topic of  Social Science “The Water Cycle”, to be more precise they will get acquainted with its 4 stages:  Evaporation, Condensation, Precipitation, Collection.  The students will eventually do both oral and writing activities which will consist in their presentation and further explanation of each of the stages of the water cycle.  After the explicit explanation of the teacher of the stages of “The Water Cycle”, firstly the students are going to do a small test in writing, where they will be given a certain picture representing the  basic notions of the topic, they will have to fill in the gaps, writing down the names of the elements  of the topic. Then they will be divided into groups of 4, each group will be given the task to explain  a certai

Our Solar System

This is one activity that we always do to wrap and close up our Solar System Unit. The activity consist on the exposition of the Solar System models previously created by our students. Pupils can create their models in groups or on their own, and they can use any materials they can think of. They bring the models to the class and explain the materials that they have chosen and why, the differents planets and their characteristcs, etc. M. Lourdes Santamaria

Taboo game

The activity that I have thought is Taboo Game. Students would have to pick a card and try to explain the main word without saying forbidden words. The rest of students will have to guess the main word using concrete oral structures. From my own personal experience as a Primary teacher, some students would feel fear when they have to talk in front the rest of class. I think that playing games, such as Taboo Game, could make our students to try to jump this barrier and use their English language to be understood. Not only Taboo does give us the change of improving our content skill, but it will also help us to express what we know, how to interact with each other and how to make use of specific questions like: Is it...? or maybe Could it be...? This could be used as a pattern in terms of communication. Alberto de Miguel

Landscapes using dry erase pockets

In groups, pupils draw different landscapes ( mountain, sea, plain...) in their dry erase pockets using markers. Once they finish, they describe what they have drawn and putting black cardboard in the plastic pocket children look for items using a magic torches. Example: This is a sea landscape. There are rocks. Rocks are minerals. There is an octopus, an octopus is an animal. you can find salt water in sea landscapes. Dry erase pockets are a useful tool for teaching CLIL subjects. Children love using their magic torches. you can find them on aliexpress or amazon. Laura Sáenz

Europe flipbook

My activity consists on a project where each pupil has to investigate about one European country. The information that they have to get is: The flag The shape of the country The countries/seas/oceans that are the borders Its capital city The area (km 2 ) The President of this country The currency Its official language Population (number of inhabitants) Typical food Places to visit Once they have the information, they have to create a flipbook similar to the ones that I show you in the photos. Finally, they explain orally to their classmates what they have studied and what they already know about that country. They are going to use vocabulary related to tourism, figures, food, etc. Beatriz Lastra

Communication: Facilitating and Assessing the 21st Century Skills in Education “Every art communicates because it expresses. It enables us to share vividly and deeply in meanings… For communication is not announcing things… Communication is the process of creating participation, of making common what had been isolated and singular… the conveyance of meaning gives body and definiteness to the experience of the one who utters as well as to that of those who listen.” – John Dewey The idea of Communication really is more then a skill… it is a foundation for learning. A baby learns the art of Communication through the very need to Communicate. When students first begin their schooling they are are filled with the desire to communicate. They understand that communication is a two way street. Somewhere along the way learning in school begins to become a one way street. Students become communicated at , expected to absorb knowledge through listening. While listening is a communicat
